In studying mathematics, we need to use four mathematical operations. If the knowledge of those four mathematical operations is poor, it is very difficult to study mathematics . According to the information received from the people who directly involved in education field, the knowledge of four mathematical operations in children is very poor. Therefore in this study, the knowledge of multiplication of grade 8 students was investigated. The problem which engaged in the study was the ability of multiplying in grade 8 students. This problem was investigated through three main objectives. These are the ability of multiplication of numbers, the relationship between the ability of multiplication and the students' variable and the relationship between the ability of multiplication in children and teachers' variables. To collect data for this study two instruments were used. The first one of these is the question paper. The students ability of multiplication was tested from that. The second is a questionnaire to collect data of teachers. Information were obtained on teachers educational qualifications , professional qualifications ,gender and experiences from that. The data collected through the above was analysed by using statistical techniques. The results of this study reveals that the main reason is the influence of the gender of the students on the ability of multiplication. Further, it shows that the teachers' gender also influences on the ability of multiplication. Thereby it can be concluded that the knowledge of multiplying in the students of Type- 2 schools in Kalutara education zone is not in a satisfactory levelen-USMathematicsMultiplicationA study onachievement level in multiplication of grade eight students in type-2 schools of Kalutara education zoneThesis
