The harvesting of organs for transplantation is done according to the legal framework of the country and based on circulars, protocols and guidelines of health and legal authorities. Clear knowledge regarding medico-legal issues and ethical aspects are mandatory for an effective transplantation program. The authors attempt to critically evaluate the medico-legal and ethical aspects pertaining to the existing system for tissue donation and transplantation in Sri Lanka and compare the local provisions with those existing in other countries.
