Preparation of a supplementry book on "man and the environment" (unit 15) for G.C.E. ( A/L) chemistry students

Abstract

The aim of this project was to prepare a supplementary book for the 15ᵗʰ unit of G.C.E. (A/L) Chemistry syllabus (Man and the Environment). The topics included in this supplementary book are also relevant to some topics in science and Technology (Grade7 — Grade 11) and G.C.E. (A/L) biology syllabus. Data were collected from questionnaires, observations and practical work. Questionnaire was analyzed to understand students’ background knowledge about environment and its surroundings. Observations and practical work were helped to get a first hand experienced about waste treatment methods and its principles. The amount of waste is increasing daily. It will be a severe problem in near the future. Therefore Waste treatment methods are formed a main component, of this book. Major components of environment, pollution, waste, introduction of new practicals, and Global and local (rules, and regulations) environmental issues are described in the rest of the book. Each chapter helps students to increase their subject knowledge about environmental science. The subject of Chemistry plays major role in environmental education. One of the aims of this project was to raise the interest of the students in Environmental science. Theoretical knowledge would help to inspire and encourage younger generation to inquiry about the facts and share that experience in their daily life. It’s also hoped to improve awareness and encourage them to suck environmental justice.
