Abstract
The ฮณ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, regulating neuronal excitability and reducing anxiety. Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative stress by neutralising free radicals, lowering the risk of chronic diseases. This study evaluated the GABA content and antioxidant properties of six edible leaves: ๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ณ๐ข๐บ๐ข ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช (Karapincha), ๐๐ด๐ฑ๐ข๐ณ๐ข๐จ๐ถ๐ด ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ถ๐ด (Hathawariya), ๐๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ข ๐ข๐ฒ๐ถ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข (Kankun), ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข (Gotu Kola), ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ข ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข (Murunga), and ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ข ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ข (Nivithi). GABA content was determined using the Kitaoka and Nakano spectroscopic method. Antioxidant capacity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content (TPC) was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Methanol extracts (0.156 to 5.00 mg mLโปยน) were prepared for all assays, and the activity at 1 mg mLโปยน was extrapolated from the dose-response curves. ๐. ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช had the highest GABA content (0.175 mg mLโปยน), followed by ๐. ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ถ๐ด (0.124 mg mLโปยน), ๐. ๐ข๐ฒ๐ถ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข (0.065 mg mLโปยน), ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ข (0.051mg mLโปยน) ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข (0.043 mg mLโปยน) and ๐. ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข (0.022 mg mLโปยน). The highest radical scavenging activity as measured by DPPH assay, was observed in ๐. ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช (ICโ
โ = 1.49), while ๐. ๐ข๐ฒ๐ถ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค, ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข, ๐. ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข, ๐. ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ถ๐ด and ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ข exhibited ICโ
โ values 4.80, 4.92, 6.32, 19.46 and 80.50 mg mLโปยน, respectively compared to vitamin C (ICโ
โ = 0.16mg mLโปยน). The highest FRAP value of 2.08 ยตmol trolox equivalents mLโปยน was recorded for ๐. ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข followed by of ๐. ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช (1.66 ยตmol mLโปยน) and ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข (0.48ยตmol mLโปยน). ๐. ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช also showed the highest TPC (0.20 mg mLโปยน of gallic acid equivalents) followed by ๐. ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข (0.09 mg mLโปยน). Among the tested edible leaves, ๐. ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ช demonstrated the highest levels of GABA, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content, indicating its strong potential as a functional food with neuroprotective and antioxidant properties.
