Problems faced by grade eleven students in remote schools in learning mathematics -Thirukkovil educational zone

Abstract

Mathematics plays an important role in each and every person's life because it is related to each and every activity of our life. So, it is vital for a child to learn it from his school time . It is important for a child to pass mathematics subject under Sri Lanka's education system. Most ofthe G.C.E (OIL) students studying at remote schools in Sri Lanka fail in mathematics subject, and as a result they are unable to continue their education. In this .study, we attempted to identify the real causes for this situation. In this Survey, I have identified six remote schools out of the twelve such schools in the Thirukkovil Education Zone; collected data from the said schools' teachers, students, principals, and parents; evaluated such data and put forward some conclusion and suggestions to improve learning of mathematics. I strongly believe that this Survey will, to a great extent, benefit students' learning of mathematics in remote schools in the Island.
