| dc.description.abstract | As the ultimate way to take advantage of today's technology to enhance any organizations productivity and efficiency, web based online systems play a vital role. Web based applications have evolved significantly over recent years and with improvements in security and technology there are plenty of scenarios where traditional manual processes as well as the traditional software based applications and systems could be improved by migrating them to a web based application. Even though all the universities III Sri Lanka have their own web . sites to publish information, there are very limited number of online systems offered by Sri Lankan universities that a user could interact and get their work done, other than they facilitate with an email system. In most ofthe universities just as the other manual processes the processes of students register for exams and results issuing are still done in manually. So the same situation could be found in the University of Kelaniya and as same as in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. This traditional paper based manual process has many problems and limitation. As well as they are time consuming and inefficient. Therefore, a come up with an online system where the students could register for exams online and view their results online and also a system that process the results online were identified as a main requirement in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies as they seek new trends in this competitive education system. This report presents the details of developed online system as the solution for the above requirements. The proposed system aids all the parties to achieve more efficient and transparent process of results manipulation and more effective . exam registration process. The system was developed using PHP 5.3.5 (Hypertext Preprocessor), a widely used scripting language for server side programming and JavaScript and JQuery were used as the client side scripting languages. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) the preliminary markup language to web developing was used to develop the web pages and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) was used to properly design the pages. MYSQL 5.5.8 free and open source software was used as the database management system. And Apache 2.2.17 was used as the web server. smtp4dev was used as a dummy SMTP server. The developed system was thoroughly tested with test data and the test results indicated that the system functions correctly and efficiently. | |
