Assessment of practical work In G.C.E. (A/L) physics in Sri Lankan schools

Abstract

Education involves or implies imparting knowledge, together with developing of proper skills and correct attitudes in the student. But our past educational programme resulted in the cramming of knowledge and little was done to ensure development of skills and much less to ensure development of attitude in the students. This situation paved the way for questioning the whole setup of the education system and the educationists felt that serious measures should be taken to correct this situation. The new reforms as a result, reiterate practical and activities in the learning process of the students. The absence of a perfect practical assessment scheme for G.C.E (A/L) Physics not only hampered the normal progress of the practical work but also produced students who seriously lacked the skills and attitudes that the community expects from them. Under the circumstances I hope the project “ Assessment of practical work in G.C.E (A/L) Physics in Sri Lankan schools “ would be a appreciated by majority of teachers and students. I have in this project work of mine tried to analyse in the light of past experience, the difficulties confronted by teachers and students in handling practical work assessment. The implementations of the proposed practical work assessment scheme will result in imparting the correct skills and attitudes to student. Main aim of this project is to help the teachers and students to handle the Physics practical assessment so that they contribute towards the building up of student’s personality that comprised the vital characteristics of proper skills and attitudes in addition to knowledge.
