Abstract
Present study was carried out in order to reduce organic emission in paint industry. Paint is basically protective and decorative material that having wide variety of applications throughout the world. With the vast usage of paints all over the world, VOC emission to the environment has increased, because VOC is a major component of paints. There are two methods to minimize the emission of VOC in the paint to the environment. 1. Eliminating the VOC sources. 2. Using less volatile compounds In this study, Asian Paints Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. was selected as the paint manufacture and all the possible sources of VOC emission and situations were identified. According to the results revealed from the study a focusing point was identified and applicable developmental suggestions were presented to minimize the emission of VOC , such as developing a lid as mentioned in the discussion, applying a cooling system to the pan , introducing a waste solvent recovery method and distributing a leaflet to the staff members of the factory to give an idea of hazardous VOCs. Without re-engineering of the product, amount of VOC content released to the environment by paints cannot be reduced. But with good housekeeping practices and with the above given suggestions the reduction of VOC emission will be approved while production.
