How successful is the newly introduced biology curriculum in schools - to date

Abstract

Science about living beings is considered as Bio science. This is taught under the title of “Biology”. Biology has become a new concept to the Advanced Level curriculum in Sri Lanka. A new biology curriculum was introduced to schools in September 1998 and is being implemented in schools for nearly one year. This study was based on, “The feasibility of the newly introduced Biology curriculum in schools to date jn one district: of Sri Lanka” ‘ The evaluation was based on some of the short term objectives in the syllabus as well as some specific objectives throughout the syllabus. The research was done by giving a questionnaire, an achievement test for students and having an interview with Biology teachers. The out come is discussed in Chapter3. I found out that vision towards Biology was at a satisfactory level in school. Students have shown an improvement in their learn to learn , competencies. Teachers’ contribution to expose the students to the 21" century through mass media was successful to a certain extent. The students application of their classroom theory to the outside world was not at a satisfactory level. The school’s contribution to expose the students to learning activities and the teacher’s awareness of organized procedure of the syllabus were very poor.
