Abstract
In a rapidly changing world such as that we live in, changes in educational field has become inevitable. Adaptability to changes is very important for students to face the challenges of the new era. Present day education is mainly concerned about learning and not merely teaching. Therefore, the role of teachers has taken a new dimension in which teacher is only a facilitator in acquiring knowledge. Students on the other hand, are expected to engage in a learning process that helps to update their knowledge and skills. Teachers should provide opportunities to achieve the expected objectives of the curriculum. It has been found that the traditional passive learning methods currently used in schools are of little importance in identifying the deeply held misconceptions of students and encouraging an effective learning that leads to a conceptual change. To develop an activity based student centered learning environment, particularly to teach the unit “man and the environment” in A/L Chemistry, amodified approach is suggested in this project which will help students understand the basic concepts in the lesson in amore meaningful manner. In this modified approach, use of ICT in class room is recommended to teach the unit effectively. By implementing this ,it is expected that the students will be benefited through developing various cognitive skills. They will also be motivated towards self— learning. As computers are now well established as instructional resources in education no one will deny that involvement of students in learning the particular unit will help to enhance their knowledge to the expected mastery level.
