dc.description.abstract | The aims and objectives of the project were mainly to improve the reading habit among G.C.E.(Advanced Level) students, an essential feature for the next millennium; to provide the students with supplementary knowledge, specially in the field of Chemistry; and to create among students, an awareness on environmental issues and a willingness to protect environment.. The above objectives were meant to be achieved by means of a supplementary text book. The topic of the book was selected as ‘Petroleum Industry’, after analyzing the G.C.E.(Advanced Level) Chemistry syllabus and discussing the matter with a group of experienced Chemistry teachers. Data collection for the book was done by studying various text books, annual reports and journals written on petroleum industry, environment and energy resources etc. The format of the book was decided after studying various supplementary books, written under various topics, followed by observing students’ reactions to different types of formats. The supplementary book consists of eight chapters. The introductory chapter discusses about the importance of energy for human life and about how people meet their energy requirements. The second chapter deals with the geological formation of petroleum and with the origin and development of petroleum industry. ‘The next chapter discusses about the composition of petroleum, distribution of it and the global demand and supply of oil. Fourth chapter contains information on the drilling and refining of crude oil and the products of the fractional distillation of petroleum, while the fifth chapter briefly deals with monomers for polymer industry, which are actually petroleum products. The next chapter briefly discusses about the petroleum industry of Sri Lanka. The seventh chapter is based on the drawbacks of fossil fuels that includes petroleum. . It talks about the non-renewable nature of petroleum resources and the pollution aspect with regards to petroleum industry. The final chapter contains a brief description of alternative sources of energy to petroleum and other fossil fuels, including their advantages and disadvantage. | |
