Introducing Tamil language in computer assisted learning software

Abstract

Today the World Wide Web has become a very important part of our every day lives and e-Learning is a new era of our education system. E-learning is the integration of computer technology and the Internet with school curriculum. We need a material that will supports teachers, by presenting some practical examples on how computer assisted learning can be integrated with modern ways of teaching and learning. Today people use different techniques for designing Computer Assisted Learning software in e-Learning system. A software tool for predicting the usability of web sites used in education applications is under development in Sri Lanka. It is introduced an existing software Hotpotatoes in this e-Learning system. But there is lack of Tamil Language in that software. This project is aimed towards Introducing Tamil Language in this Computer Assisted Learning Software as suitable for Tamil medium students and teachers. This report discusses the emergence, concept and technology behind the e-learning in some detail and includes the ideas given by e-Learning professionals. Further it describes the use of open-source software to build e-Learning system by various countries and looks deeply in some extent at the open source Hotpotatoes software. The aim of the work is to use the Hotpotatoes software to build a Computer Assisted Learning software for the Tamil Medium Schools in Sri Lanka. The need for a Computer Assisted Learning software for Tamil Medium Schools in Sri Lanka to facilitate the educational and other services is argued and achievements and obstacles encountered during the project while providing directions and guidance for further improvement and research in the developed software.
