Free and open source spam and virus filtering gateway for remote mail transfer agent

Abstract

Mail service plays a critical role in the Internet and e-commerce field. Spams and virus are the main threats for mail service. If mail filtering is not taken place. spams and virus are delivered to desktop and Mail User Agent (MUA). Virus infection will harm the system rigorously in many occasions. Spams are highly effect to the productivity of the users work. Therefore spams and virus should be filtered at gate way level of the network. Though there are many commercial products like Barracuda and bright mail, those are not affordable for many of Sri Lankan institutes and corporations due to cost and scalability. Same institute or corporation may have many branches in different geographical locations, since one commercial box does not support all branches: instead separate Barracuda or bright mail box should be purchase for each location. The supremacy of open source can be operated to have single mail filtering gateway and mails are routed to Mail Transfer Agents (MTA) at different geographical locations. In this work a mail filtering gateway is developed by integrating sendmail. clamav, mimedefang and spamassine.
