This paper describes a research study of an industrial organisation in Ceylon The object of this study was principally to describe the relation of Western organisational methods officially adopted in the organisation to the methods actually used, and also to trace the influence which the environment had on the working of the organisation. These two questions are intertwined, and the answers to these were set out in a set of models. The description which follows has a brief overview of the literature on non-Western organisations specially as they relate to conditions familia to Ceylon. The findings of the study are discussed in relation to this literature.
