Abstract

Experiments are contacted with four different concentrations of Nacl solutions as samples. The solutions are filtered through glass columns packed with natural substances, such as clay, sawdust, rice husk, tile powder and brick powder, and resin separately at various flow rates and the filtrates are collected every time. The conductance readings and the pH values of the initial samples and their filtrates are measured at various flow rates at every time. From the graphs plotted for conductivity against time and pH against time, a significant change is observed when using clay as the filter. Therefore, Na⁺ ions are removed from saline water effectively by clay. Experiments on the removal of salinity from saline water by using natural substances can easily be expanded as research projects for the G.C.E (A/L) students.
