Improving the user-friendliness of Tamil web browsing

Abstract

The need for a user friendly Tamil Web browsing on the Internet has long been felt with the increased use of Tamil font encodings. While there exist few techniques on the Internet, those are not suitable to less Technical savvy users in some situations. Therefore an end user has to learn some configuration steps to view the Tamil web pages. In this project, a solution to the problem was presented, using the Tamil encoding translation technique from TAM, TAB, TSCII, Bamini to Unicode encodings and wise versa by server side approach. This technique can be extended to other existing Tamil font encodings and other native languages like Sinhala. The primary advantages of this technique are improving the user-friendliness of Tamil Web browsing and existing Tamil Web pages need no modification and easily migrate to Tamil Unicode encoded Web pages.
