Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to find out the impact of content based English : education which is in operation in the school system of the country on the development of students 'speaking skills. Since over ten years have elapsed 'after the introduction of the English medium in Sri Lankan schools, it is of paramount importance to examine whether the objectives of such ventures have been achieved. Even though, the improvement occurred in the area of learning English the basic skills of learning English were not improving in the same manner. But the curriculum reforms expect that the English medium students would achieve English fluency by following the English medium curriculum. Practically too, this fact is proved by .the realism. That is English medium students improve their writing skill as well as the speaking skill through this process. It is inevitably happening. The objective of this research is to find out the reasons or the issues which lead to the improvement of English in speaking. Three data collecting materials were used in carrying out this research. They are a questionnaire, interview and observation. The results of the research proves that the English medium students are able to improve their English speaking skill due to various reasons. The main reasons are the continuous exposure to the English language during the class time and the continuous interaction with each other in English language.
