The fact that since political independence there has been a cleat trend towards greater public sector involvement within the economy of Sri Lanka is undisputed. There is however, a serious gap in the data base required for a quantitative analysis and evaluation of the role of the public sector in the national economy. The present study is an attempt at filling a very small area of this existing data gap
