Abstract
Environmental pollution has become a global crisis today. Making awareness about pollution and creating good attitudes about the environment are an essential task. The most convenient way to reach this goal is to provide the knowledge and skills through school education system. This research was done to produce a study guide on air and water pollution for advanced level students. The possibility of introducing some laboratory experiments that can be done at G.C.E. advanced level, with respect to evaluation of water quality was also conducted for this purpose.
Environmental pollutants cause detrimental health effects. Nausea, headaches, heart diseases, bronchitis, respiratory illness and cancer are some of the health hazards caused by air pollutants. Cholera, typhoid, bacterial dysentery, infectious hepatitis are some of the diseases caused by polluted water.
According to the results of the experiments the dissolved oxygen concentration of the water samples were very low. Biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand values indicated higher values.Taking Kandy Lake as an example, practical exposure on water pollution could be given at advanced level.
