It has been well documented that, pregnancy and the usage of hormonal contraceptives could be predisposing factors for periodontal disease. Thus, pregnant women and hormonal contraceptive users could exhibit more severe periodontal disease than non- pregnant women or hormonal contraceptive non-users. This investigation aimed to study the effects of pregnancy and hormonal contraceptives on periodontal tissues. The findings are based on the empirical data gathered from two test and two control groups of women in the Kandy District in Sri Lanka. Two test groups were, pregnant women and women using hormonal contraceptives. Their oral hygiene and periodontal disease levels were compared with matched control groups of non-pregnant women and hormonal contraceptive non-users respectively. By using a Brodontic pressure sensitive probe, all women were clinically examined for plaque levels, gingival condition and loss of periodontal attachment, four times during the study, at three monthly intervals. Since each of the test groups had similar oral hygiene levels compared to the respective control group, it was possible to ascertain the effects of pregnancy and hormonal contraceptives on periodontal disease levels. Gingival inflammation was significantly increased during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy compared to the controls
