Abstract
An island wide hydrogeochemical survey was carrted out to evaluate spattal variations tn water quality for different parameters of the groundwater in Srt Lanka (parameters: TDS, total hardness, NOx, NOgs NH, Cl, F, St0,, total V, total Cr, Mn, total Fe, Co, Cu, Zn) and Kandy topographte sheet (para- meters: NO, MOg» NE 4, F, Total V, total Cr, total Fe, Mn, Co, Cu). A total of 25 water quality maps (15 maps for Srt Lanka at 1:506880 scale) and 10 maps for Kandy at 1:68860 scale) were produced for the first ttme in Sri Lanka. Depending on its water chemistry, the groundwater of Srt Lanka has been elasstfied tnto four matn types, namely Ca, Mg, NatK and non-dominant catton (NDC) type. Each of these major groups are subdivided tnto 2 or 4 subgroups. The aquatie chemistry of the Mahawelt river, the Kelani river, the Wellawatte canal, the Mid canal/Kandy, the Kandy lake/Kandy and the Polgolla reservoir/Kandy were also investiga- ted. Even though industrial pollutton has not caused much eon- cern in Srt Lanka, the environmental impact of polluted canals running through densely populated cities partteularly in develop- ing countrtes has asswned sertous proportions. In a separate study, ratnwater and tap water samples colle- eted from different parts of Sri Lanka have been analyzed for thetr ehemteal constituents. It was observed that except for minor occurences , 'acid - rain’! ts sttll not prevalent in Srt Lanka. Further, the tap water has been graded into 3 categories depending on the source of the water, In view of the fact, that only a small percentage of the populatton of Srt Lanka have access to ptped water, no sertous health hazards due to the poor qualtty of the tap water have been encountered.
